What sets Total Wireless apart from some of its MVNO brethren is that it will let customers purchase data that doesn't expire after a month.According to a February PhoneNewsreport, Total Wireless is owned by America Movil, which also operates the TracFone Wireless family of MVNO brands. The report also said that the Total Wireless service runs on Verizon's network.A Total Wireless spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and a Verizon spokesman did not immediately have a comment.

However, Total Wireless' coverage map closely resembles Verizon's' map (and is even in red, Verizon's corporate color). The Total Wireless website also says that it provides nationwide coverage on "America's largest, most reliable network," language similar to that Verizon uses in its marketing.Total Wireless offers three plans:$35 per month: A single-line plan with unlimited voice and texting and 2.5 GB of data.$60 per month: A two-line family plan with unlimited voice and texting and 5 GB of data shared across devices.$110 per month: A four line family plan with unlimited voice and texting and 12 GB of data shared across devices. In each of those three plans, the data allotment is only available during the month and it does not carry over to the next month. However, Total Wireless offers $10 "Carryover" data cards that do not expire.

Total said that unused Carryover data doesn't expire as long as a customer has active service, so consumers can keep that additional data they buy. That offer fits with the trend that C Spire Wireless, T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) and AT&T Mobility (NYSE: T) have embraced with their respective rollover data offerings.Customers can switch to Total Wireless without a contract or credit check, the company said.Total Wireless' device selection is somewhat lacking though. For instance, the company offers the entry-level Motorola Moto E Android smartphone, which is relatively recent, for $90, as well as the Alcatel One Touch Pop Icon, which was released last fall, for $150.

However, the service also offers the older Samsung Galaxy S III, which came out in 2012, for $250.For more:- see this Total Wireless site- see this Phone News articleRelated Articles:Report: Google's MVNO to only run on Nexus 6, will switch between Sprint, T-Mobile and Wi-Fi networksGoogle's Pichai confirms company will launch an MVNO in the 'coming months'Sprint MVNO Ting doubled accounts in 2014 to 94,000Vodafone to launch U.S.

LTE wasn't available and LTE capable phones were blocked from activation. But that has changed. The Total Wireless site's homepage has been updated with the words "Now with LTE" and the following LTE phones are available on the Total Wireless site: LG Premier $129.99 Samsung Galaxy S5 $349.99 Samsung Galaxy S6 $499.99Total Wireless LTE phones are also available at Walmart.com with the following models listed currently: LG Rebel $59.96 ZTE Stratos $99.99 LTE Premier $129.99 Samsung Galaxy S5 $349.00If you'd rather "bring your own phone" (and should should as TracFone's phones are locked down seven ways from Sunday and almost never receive Android security updates) that looks like it's possible.

A HowardForums member entered his Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 MEID serial number on Total Wireless' Bring Your Own Phone page. The phone was accepted and the user began the activation process. At some point in the process the site asked for the user's Total Wireless SIM ID.

There's was an "I don't have a SIM" check box or link which the user choose. The site then said that a free SIM would be sent. The user had to purchase a month's service for $35 plus tax. Of course the real test will be if the SIM ever arrives, but it looks promising at this point. Total Wireless has some of the best prices of any operator for unlimited talk and text and a substantial amount of high speed data on the Verizon network: The following plans with LTE data are available: $35/month: unlimited talk and messaging and 5 GB of data. $60/month: Two line plan with unlimited talk, messaging and 8 GB of shared data $85/month: Three line plan with unlimited talk and messaging and 12 GB of shared data $100/month: Four line plan with unlimited talk and messaging total wireless network coverage 15 GB of shared data3 GB of rollover data can be added to any plan for $10.

Like all Verizon MVNOs, Total Wireless LTE data speeds are throttled to 5 Mpbs.Sources: Total Wireless, Howardforums Anonymous May 19, 2016 at 6:46 PMI like that plan. Was on it for quite a while. I was always running up against the 100 minute limit though so I had to change. Of course that was before Hangouts Dialer. On a Freemium now and have no monthly costs but if that ended tomorrow, I would choose the Total $35 over the $30 secret plan.

Delete Anonymous June 27, 2016 at 3:01 PMIf you can get around not ever having to use customer service, Straight Talk has a hugely better Network than Sprint or T-Mobile for that matter.I have friends who use it and have no complaints because it works everywhere they go.

Which is something that just doesn't happen with Sprint. I think I can live with that. I may add 3GB of rollover data just in case.I do wish they had a better deal for international calling like page plus that gives you $10 credit for international calls.

Or at least a direct calling app like page plus but even with all the MTS tax it's still a good deal for 5GB. A Total Wireless website popped up last week carrying a TracFone Wireless copyright notice in the footer. TracFone, which is owned by huge Mexican based multinational mobile operator America Movil, already operates the TracFone, NET10, Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, Page Plus and SafeLink prepaid MVNO brands in the US.Total Wireless' coverage map makes it obvious that it's running on the Verizon network, as do the four Android devices shown on the Total Wireless home page.

The $79.99 ZTE Savvy Z750, $89.99 Motorola Moto E XT830c, $149.99 Alcatel OneTouch Pop Icon and $249.99 Samsung Galaxy S3 all should be familiar to TracFone watchers.According to the site, Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) and Hotspot will also be available on Total Wireless. There's a picture of the Unimax U240C 3G only hotspot but no price is listed for it or for hotspot data plans.Total Wireless' plans seem intended to compete with AT&T's Cricket brand with its emphasis on multi-line or shared plans.

There are three multi-line options: $60/month for 2 lines with unlimited talk & text and 5 GB of shared data $85/month for 3 lines with unlimited talk & text and 9 GB of shared data $110/month for 4 lines with unlimited talk & text and 12 GB of shared dataThere are also a couple individual plans: $25/month: unlimited talk & text and no data $35/month: unlimited talk & text and 2.5 GBFor $10 you can add 1.5 GB of data that never expires to any plan. Total Wireless' $35/month for unlimited talk and text and 2.5 GB individual plan pricing is considerably less expensive than other Verizon based options including TracFone's other brands.

Page Plus is $39.99 for unlimited T&T and 1 GB, Straight Talk and NET10 are $45 and $50 respectively for unlimited T&T and 3 GB.Total Wireless shared plans are also cheaper than NET10's family plans which cost $90 for 2 lines, $130 for 3 lines and $170 for 4 lines with each line getting unlimited talk and text and 3 GB of data. The trade off for lower prices might be is no LTE.

There's no mention of LTE on the site and the phones shown are 3G only, with the possible exception of the Samsung Galaxy S3. Although Verizon's S3 is LTE capable, the ones sold by TracFone's Straight Talk and NET10 are 3G only models and there's little reason total wireless network coverage think that Total Wireless' S3 will be any different.Update 2/24: The Total Wireless Terms and Conditions page confirms that LTE is not available and that LTE capable phones are not allowed: " Phones and wireless devices that are 4G and 4G LTE capable are currently not supported by Total Wireless." Hat tip to an anonymous reader for discovering this quote.Although the Total Wireless site seems to be in a relatively finished state, the actual service doesn't appear to be live yet.

Attempting to buy a phone brings up a "Coming Soon" page. The site also says "Available at Walmart" but I'm unable to find any mention of Total Wireless on walmart.com.According to PhoneNews.com, Total Wireless will be sold exclusively online and at Walmart.Update 2/25: It looks like it's now possible to buy phones and service on the Total Wireless site. The currently available phones are all 3G as expected.

They are the $59.99 LG Optimus Fuel, $89.99 Motorola Moto E XT830c, $99.99 Samsung Galaxy Ace Style, $149.99 Alcatel OneTouch Pop Icon and $249.99 Samsung Galaxy S3. Shipping is free on orders of $29.99 or more. BYOP access codes don't seem to be available online yet.Update 2/28: Total Wireless phones and airtime cards are now available at walmart.com.

Total Wireless BYOP access codes are now available on the Total Call site. Anonymous February 23, 2015 at 11:20 AMAll the well deserved criticism of American Movil aside, this is excellent news.

The more competing in the MVNO field, the better. This can only drive down prices, improve the deals offered by others. Reply Delete Catt February 23, 2015 at 12:17 PMI agree. More competition = better prices. . I only hope that Total Wireless does manage to acquire 4G LTE sometime soon.At the same time, I wonder why AM felt that it had to offer another MVNO. Wouldn't it have made more sense to just overhaul the plans and prices at PagePlus Cellular and/or Straight Talk?Delete Anonymous February 23, 2015 at 3:37 PMI think a substantial portion of these customers are under-informed and have proverbial "blinders" on, they see only what's going on at their MVNO.

I guess the thinking is if you put lower-cost plans on Straight Talk, they'll cannibalize way more $45 plan subscribers than if the lower-cost plans were on a different MVNO. (Even if their BOTH being featured at Walmart, haha.) Delete Anonymous March 3, 2015 at 5:58 PMI sPee-a-boo! I see you, Verizon coverage mapIts fun to watch the wireless carriers struggle to keep their prices sky-high while still dipping into the low end of the market.

Its quite a contorted two-step. It requires downgrading certain phones and services, or otherwise hampering them from working total wireless network coverage full efficiency to make a low-value product, but also creating an arms length sub-brand so as to not tarnish the main brand (or offend customers who are paying double and triple the price).

The sub-brands must pull quite the inside straight they have to appeal to the poor credit and coupon-seeking crowds alike, but still somehow carry enough stigma that the high-priced customers wouldnt want to be caught dead with total wireless network coverage cell phone brand two-step reached new heights a few weeks ago when Verizon quietly launched Total Wireless. The service is operated by TracFone but, critically, uses Verizon towers.

You wouldnt know Verizon is involved from looking at the Total Wireless website Verizons name isnt on the about us page. The coverage map, many observers have remarked, is obviously a map of Verizons towers, however.

Total Wireless didnt even change the color scheme.Youd have to wonder why Verizon would beembarrassed about this new product. Well, heres why: individual data plans start at $35 per month for 2.5 gigs of data, when you bring your own phone. Thats about double what the parent brand plans cost ($75 for 2 gigs on the plan I spied).

Even better (worse?) overage for Total Wireless costs $10 for 1.5 more gigs, while its $15 for 1 gig on VerizonWireless. Its the same data. It just costs less for the discount brand.Well, not exactly. While the coverage for Total Wireless is the same as Verizon Wireless, the speed is not. Total wireless phones dont get access to Verizons fast 4G network. Search the firms website with care and you will eventually find the catch on the terms and conditions page customers can only use the slower 3G service on Total Wireless.

Note, this isnt obvious from the Total Wireless home page, which boasts only that Lucky for you, we are on Americas largest network. Now, theres nothing wrong with segmenting the market. Want basic smartphone access? Pay about $40-50. Want super smartphone access? Pay about $100-$125. Thats fair enough. I just wish it didnt have to be so intentionally confusing. Of course, Verizon didnt invent this problem.

In fact, its late to the game. All the big wireless carriers do it The AT&T discount service is called Cricket Wireless, Sprints isBoost Mobile, and T-Mobile is GoSmartMobile. All of them let folks have smartphones at a reasonable price, and thats great.

The phones will leave behind users who want to take advantage of the latest apps, video, and of course, snazzy new iPhones and Androids, but thats not the end of the world. The folks at SaveOnPhone.com think phones are changing so quickly that no-contract phone are really the way to go.Whatever plan you choose, do not sign a contract for cell service, says John Oldshue Find a good used phone or buy one, but dont fall for the free phone with a contract which all big four carriers offer.

Prices are dropping so quickly, so there is no longer any reason to be locked in a contract for an extended period of time.Thats certainly advice many folks should take to heart, though there are still some lingering reasons to go with contract phones mostly, to get the latest phone. But I believe leaps between phone generations are also getting smaller, which means one-year-old smartphones arent as stale as they would have been a few years ago.

So, get to know your secret sub-brand and check out your choices. You no longer have to sacrifice service availability to get discount smartphone service.Sign up for Bob Sullivans free email newsletter. The coverage map looks like that because they use multiple networks for coverage (a full map).

Tracfone and the others use multiple networks. Each phone is different. For example the older Iphones on straight talk are on Verizon towers. The newer Iphones on straight talk are on sprint and att towers. Dont go into this thinking you will be on Verizon towers. That is why they ask for the zip of where you will be using the phone when you shop for phones. I agree that buying refurbished phones rather than getting roped into an expensive two year contract is much smarter.

The phones are so fragile I always end up using my insurance and paying the huge deductible for a refurbished phone anyway. The deductible for phones used to be $50 now its $200 or more, depending on your phone which is nearly what the same refurbished phone will cost you. When add on the original cost of the phone, the $35 activation fee (which ironically they dont charge if you activate your own phone), the $10 a month you pay for insurance and my carrier, Verizon, charges double ($40 a month vs $20) for line access for all phones under contract.
