What sets Total Wireless apart from some of its MVNO brethren is that it will let customers purchase data that doesn't expire after a month.According to a February PhoneNewsï¿½report, Total Wireless is owned by America Movil, which also operates the TracFone Wireless family of MVNO brands. The report also said that the Total Wireless service runs on Verizon's network.A Total Wireless spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and a Verizon spokesman did not immediately have a comment.

However, Total Wireless' coverage map closely resembles Verizon's' map (and is even in red, Verizon's corporate color). The Total Wireless website also says that it provides nationwide coverage on "America's largest, most reliable network," language similar to that Verizon uses in its marketing.Total Wireless offers three plans:ï¿½$35 per month: A single-line plan with unlimited voice and texting and 2.5 GB of data.ï¿½$60 per month: A two-line family plan with unlimited voice and texting and 5 GB of data shared across devices.ï¿½$110 per month: A four line family plan with unlimited voice and texting and 12 GB of data shared across devices.In each of those three plans, the data allotment is only available during the month and it does not carry over to the next month.However, Total Wireless offers $10 "Carryover" data cards that do not expire.

Total said that unused Carryover data doesn't expire as long as a customer has active service, so consumers can keep that additional data they buy. That offer fits with the trend that C Spire Wireless, T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) and AT&T Mobility (NYSE: T) have embraced with their respective rollover data offerings.Customers can switch to Total Wireless without a contract or credit check, the company said.Total Wireless' device selection is somewhat lacking though. For instance, the company offers the entry-level Motorola Moto E Android smartphone, which is relatively recent, for $90, as well as the Alcatel One Touch Pop Icon, which was released last fall, for $150.

A HowardForums member entered his Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 MEID serial number on Total Wireless' Bring Your Own Phone page. The phone was accepted and the user began the activation process. At some point in the process the site asked for the user's Total Wireless SIM ID.

There's was an "I don't have a SIM" check box or link which the user choose. The site then said that a free SIM would be sent. The user had to purchase a month's service for $35 plus tax. Of course the real test will be if the SIM ever arrives, but it looks promising at this point. A Total Wireless website popped up last week carrying a TracFone Wireless copyright notice in the footer. TracFone, which is owned by huge Mexican based multinational mobile operator America Movil, already operates the TracFone, NET10, Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, Page Plus and SafeLink prepaid MVNO brands in the US.Total Wireless' coverage map makes it obvious that it's running on the Verizon network, as do the four Android devices shown on the Total Wireless home page.

The $79.99 ZTE Savvy Z750, $89.99 Motorola Moto E XT830c, $149.99 Alcatel OneTouch Pop Icon and $249.99 Samsung Galaxy S3 all should be familiar to TracFone watchers.According to the site, Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) and Hotspot will also be available on Total Wireless. There's a picture of the Unimax U240C 3G only hotspot but no price is listed for it or for hotspot data plans.Total Wireless' plans seem intended to compete with AT&T's Cricket brand with its emphasis on multi-line or shared plans.

There's no mention of LTE on the site and the phones shown are 3G only, with the possible exception of the Samsung Galaxy S3. Even better (worse?) ï¿½ overage for Total Wireless costs $10 for 1.5 more gigs, while itï¿½s $15 for 1 gig on VerizonWireless. Itï¿½s the same data. It just costs less for the discount brand.Well, not exactly. While the coverage for Total Wireless is the same as Verizon Wireless, the speed is not. Total wireless phones donï¿½t get access to Verizonï¿½s fast 4G network. Search the firmï¿½s website with care and you will eventually find the catch on the terms and conditions pageï¿½ customers can only use the slower 3G service on Total Wireless.

Note, this isnï¿½t obvious from the Total Wireless home page, which boasts only that ï¿½Lucky for you, we are on Americaï¿½s largest network.ï¿½Now, thereï¿½s nothing wrong with segmenting the market. Want basic smartphone access? Pay about $40-50. Want super smartphone access? Pay about $100-$125. Thatï¿½s fair enough. I just wish it didnï¿½t have to be so intentionally confusing. Of course, Verizon didnï¿½t invent this problem.

In fact, itï¿½s late to the game. All the big wireless carriers do it ï¿½ï¿½The AT&T discount service is called Cricket Wireless, Sprintï¿½s isï¿½Boost Mobile, and T-Mobile is GoSmartMobile. All of them let folks have smartphones at a reasonable price, and thatï¿½s great.

The phones will leave behind users who want to take advantage of the latest apps, video, and of course, snazzy new iPhones and Androids, but thatï¿½s not the end of the world. Tracfone and the others use multiple networks. Each phone is different. For example the older Iphones on straight talk are on Verizon towers. The newer Iphones on straight talk are on sprint and att towers. Donï¿½t go into this thinking you will be on Verizon towers.
